Scarlett Johansson’s agent responds to Walt Disney Company statement regarding lawsuit

Deadline reported that following reports yesterday of Scarlett Johansson suing The Walt Disney Company and the company’s response, Johansson’s agent Bryan Lourd has now called Disney.

What is happening:

  • Scarlett Johansson’s agent Bryan Lourd responded to The Walt Disney Company’s statement after the initial report that Johansson was suing the company. Black Widow has been freed. He says the company falsely accused Ms Johansson of being callous during the pandemic.
  • Yesterday was reported that Johansson was suing The Walt Disney Company over the decision to release Black Widow in theaters and on Disney + simultaneously, claiming the decision was a breach of contract.

The Walt Disney Company responds:

  • After the initial report, The Walt Disney Company responded to Johansson’s lawsuit with the following statement shared by Deadline from a Disney spokesperson:
    • “There is no merit in this deposit. The trial is particularly sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Disney has fully honored Ms. Johansson’s contract and, moreover, the release of Black Widow on Disney + with Premier Access has dramatically improved her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $ 20 million she has received to date.

Johansson’s agent responds to Disney:

  • Following Disney’s statement, Johansson’s agent Bryan Lourd, co-chair of the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), released his own statement in response to The Walt Disney Company as reported by Deadline.
  • The statement indicates that Disney is trying to make Johansson believe that she is not someone she is not after violating her contract and that this is below the company that many have worked with successfully in the past.

“I’m talking about the Walt Disney Company statement that was released in response to the lawsuit filed against them yesterday by our client Scarlett Johansson. They shamelessly and wrongly accused Ms Johansson of being insensitive to the global COVID pandemic, in an attempt to make her appear as someone they and I know she is not.

Scarlett has partnered with Disney on nine films, which have grossed billions for Disney and its shareholders. The company included her salary in its press release in an attempt to arm her success as an artist and businesswoman, as if it was something she should be ashamed of. Scarlett is extremely proud of the work that she and all of Marvel’s actors, writers, directors, producers and the creative team have been involved in for over a decade.

This lawsuit was filed following Disney’s decision to knowingly breach Scarlett’s contract. They very deliberately shifted the revenue stream and profits to the Disney + side of society, leaving the artistic and financial partners out of their new equation. That’s it, pure and simple.

Disney’s direct attack on her character and all that it involved is underneath the business that many of us in the creative community have worked with successfully for decades.

As this legal battle continues, we’ll wait to see what this means for the future of Disney + Premier Access and if any more will be released for the previous films that have been sent to the service as. Cruel and Jungle cruise.
