The safest way to clean your baby’s bottom is with pure water, but that’s super unrealistic for parents on the go (picture yourself mid-road trip and needing to change a diaper).
The second best option is to find a baby wipe that’s formulated with at least 99% water. That way you know your wipes contain what you need to get the job done without any unnecessary ingredients.
All The Things You Don’t Need (or Want)
Alcohol
While the use of alcohol in personal care products isn’t always a bad thing, there are certain astringent alcohols that are considered skin irritants. For products that are meant to be used on the most sensitive parts of our bodies, like wipes, we like to avoid alcohols altogether — just to be extra safe. The only time Honest uses alcohol is in our disinfecting or cleaning products like our sanitizing alcohol wipes.
Fragrance
Lots of people, including our founder Jessica, are sensitive to fragrances. The American Academy of Dermatology, has found that they are the leading cause of cosmetic contact dermatitis — aka rashes.
Another reason to avoid fragrances altogether is because when you see the word “fragrance” on an ingredient list, it often means that you aren’t actually reading the whole ingredient list.
Even though companies are required to list ingredients on their labels, currently there is no requirement to show the full breakdown of all the different things that make up a “fragrance”. That’s how some companies get around using icky ingredients without listing them on their packaging.
Phenoxyethanol
Phenoxyethanol is a preservative used to prevent bacteria growth. But, since Phenoxyethol can be irritating on compromised skin — like when a baby gets diaper rash — we err on the side of caution.
Instead, we use a food-grade preservative system because it’s super safe and keeps your wipes ready for business.
